The Mount Washington Valley Age-Friendly Community, which joined the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities in 2018, is made up of a dozen is made up of a dozen communities (11 in New Hampshire and one in Maine).

The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities is an affiliate of the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Program, an effort launched in 2006 to help cities prepare for rapid population aging.

Membership in the AARP Age Friendly Communities Network provides a framework for assessing and improving the region’s ability to become more Age-Friendly. The framework is based on the WHO’s domains of livable communities. These include Community Connections, Health, Housing, Outdoor Spaces and Transportation.

AARP Age Friendly Communities

Our Mission:

Using the AARP Livable Community Framework, we combine the talents and resources from all of our 12 towns to further develop the Mount Washington Valley as a place for people of all ages and abilities to thrive.

Our Vision:

Citizens of all ages can say they would rather live here than anywhere else

We have a multi-year commitment from our Selectmen and the leaders of many of our existing non-profits to coordinate our efforts, magnify each other’s work, seek opportunities to learn and replicate successful models and share best practices across our towns. We are extremely fortunate to have the support of the New Hampshire and Maine AARP resources. We encourage anyone to contact us to offer ideas or to participate.

MWV Age-Friendly Community - Walkable Trails

Coming in the spring of 2024 is the MWV Age-Friendly Community iPhone app for the Most Walkable Trails. This comprehensive app will have maps, trailhead locations and photos, topographic representation of the region, and descriptions of each trail with accurate distances. We are sincerely indebted to Dr. Allmendinger for his professional expertise and gratuitous work to make this information available to hikers of all abilities of the White Mountains.

Greetings from the Director

May is a beautiful month to get fresh air and enjoy the blooming greenery and flowers we have waited for all winter.

The MWV Age-Friendly Community has two ways you can expand your options for outdoor exercise and recreation. Explore our 53 Most Walkable Trails. We chose 3-5 trails in every town for their beauty, accessibility and comfort. Several are ADA accessible. Find them on our website: MWV Trails – MWV Age Friendly. There may be blow downs or washouts so let us know what you find, send us photos of your trip, tell us a story and we will post them. If you want to start a walking group from the Gibson Center email me.

We also have the Carroll County ReCycled coop that is refurbishing bikes and holding a bike give away for people over age 60 on May 21st. Read more details in this newsletter. The MWV Rec Path from Cranmore to Hemlock Road is a perfect place to ride with friends or grandchildren. You will be among many others.

Better than any pills, walking and biking are the best therapy for so many chronic conditions. Give yourself the gift of outdoor movement in our treasured Valley.
