The Mount Washington Valley is fortunate to have local libraries that participate in the concept of “The Library of Things” and loan out equipment in addition to their huge selection of great books.

Bridging Books and Nature:

Our MWV Age-Friendly Outdoor Spaces working group recently surveyed our town libraries to find out what they are doing to enhance walking trips into nature. We found a wide range of responses and an energetic eagerness to do more if the public is interested.

Garden Buckets for Green Thumbs:

For several years, the MWV Age-Friendly Community has sponsored Garden Buckets that include tools, seeds, pots and soil for library patrons who want to plant patio, porch or lawn gardens. These will be available again this year with the pots, seeds and soil replenished after each loan. Participating libraries include Pope in Conway, Madison, Cook in Tamworth, Conway, Freedom, Fryeburg, Jackson, Ossipee. Thanks to Charlie Macomber for resupplying each library on demand.

Beyond Books: From Birdwatching to Biking:

For birders, the Freedom and Madison libraries loan binoculars. The Madison library has a full pack of birding guides as well.

The other items we found listed at some of the libraries were telescopes, snowshoes, hiking poles, a bicycle pump, a metal detector, and a trail camera. It is wise to check with your town’s library staff to see what might have become available.

The usual loan period is 7-14 days. Borrowers are responsible for good care of the equipment and pay full replacement costs if the items are lost or damaged. Library cards for the town are required. Interlibrary loans are not possible because of storage and transportation issues.

Expanding Horizons:

Our librarians are eager to expand their offerings. Freedom library recently added pickle ball rackets to their catalogue. Others are interested in adding microspikes or yaktrax for winter walking, hiking poles, and kids’ scooters. Let your library know what you want to do and how they can help you enjoy our outdoor spaces.
